Training Tip of the Month – February

How to Love your Financial Aid Office

Love is in the air, spring is still a ways off (of course Phil said just a few more weeks) but we will see! As we start to buy valentines for our families, friends, loved ones let us not forget to show love to our financial aid offices and team. I am sure that you are all very close with your team as I am with mine. You work very hard with them, spend 40+ hours a week with them, yell and scream at them (only during deadlines I am sure), and you may even spend time together outside of the office as well. Working in the financial aid office is like a relationship, you have your good days and bad days, your ups and downs, but at the end of the day you still love each other very much and would do anything for each other. My suggestion is to show your institution, students, and the team how much you do love your financial aid office. Here are some ways I have come up with to celebrate and love the office that each of us spend so much time in:

  • Decorate! Yes cut out the hearts and bring out the pink, and show all the other offices and students how much you do love financial aid. You love the reports, disbursements, first day of class, the FSA ids and everything else in between. You will be surprised at how many smiles and compliments you will get if you show your love through decorating.
  • Have an office party and spend time together telling each other what you love most about working in the field of financial aid. I have done this a few times with my staff and I enjoy hearing all the things they do love about our job, it gives everyone a free dose of happiness for the rest of the day.
  • Give your students the opportunity to tell the institution what they love about the financial aid office. We have placed a banner outside our office with markers and wrote “why do you love your NWCCD financial aid office?” I was surprised at all the heartfelt comments that students left us. It truly made me feel like we were making a difference in their lives and they knew it.
  • Last but not least, Chocolate. Yes, break out the candy and enjoy it in all of its abundance. I mean, it is February!

Enjoy your office and your coworkers, and love them all year not just in February. We play such an important part to our Institution, students and of course each other. Enjoy the holiday all month long and spread the love throughout your office.
