KASFAA Update

Submitted by Stephanie Covington, Past-President for the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators

The spring Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (KASFAA) conference was held April 17-19, 2013.  Megan McClean, Managing Director of Policy and Federal Relations at NASFAA, provided us with a “Federal Update” and also conducted a session on communicating with legislators.

The theme of the conference was KASFAA Game Show Network.  That proved to be quite fun as we played Plinko, Music Bingo, and hosted a KASFAA’s Got Talent show.  Plinko and Music Bingo served as fundraisers.  Between what we budgeted and earnings from these games, we are going to pay registration for six KASFAA members to attend the RMASFAA Summer Institute.  We are excited to be able to offer six members this opportunity and look forward to their leadership in KASFAA in future years!

Recipients are:

Nathan Buche, Hutchinson Community College

Andrew Fogel, Kansas State University

Emma Kisiel, Baker University

Jill Lucas, Garden City Community College

Megan Olsen, Wichita State University

Nichol Westendorf, Bethany College

The unusually cold weather this spring didn’t stop KASFAA colleagues from shining!  At the conference, the following were honored:

  • Outstanding Service – Bruce Lopez, Credit World Services
  • Hall of Fame – Connie Corcoran, Emporia State University

The Training Committee earned Committee of the Year honors for an outstanding job providing training for counselors.  The committee made a very concerted effort to reach every counselor at a middle school or high school, as well as TRIO.  Training was offered at 12 locations throughout the state and there were 380 attendees, a 25% increase from last year!  They also provided Neophyte training during our fall training and spring conference.  New financial aid professionals enjoyed playing KASFAArdy          (Jeopardy) and KASFAA Squares (Hollywood Squares).

We’re looking forward to another great year, helping to make a difference one student at a time.  KASFAA Officers for 2013-14 are as follows:

Past President: Stephanie Covington, University of Kansas

President: Tony Lubbers, Friends University

President-Elect:  Ben Kohl, Kansas State University

Vice-President:  Debbie Brewer, Johnson County Community College

Treasurer – Keith Fitzsimmons, University of Kansas Medical Center

Secretary: Myrna Perkins, Barton County Community College

Associate Member Representative:   Mindy Hager, First Marblehead
