Utah Spotlight ~ July
If you’ve been to Utah I’m sure you will agree that our state is beautiful! Whether you’ve visited the majestic Rocky Mountains, the incredible canyons of Eastern or Southern Utah or watched the sunset or stars appear while on Antelope Island, the scenery here is remarkable. If you haven’t been you Utah, we sincerely invite you for a breathtaking visit.
Utah celebrates our 116th year of statehood this month. Although the petition to join the Union was initially submitted in 1849, our great state was not formally accepted until 47 years later. The reason for the delay simply stated was ‘politics’. Read more about it at: http://historytogo.utah.gov/facts/brief_history/statehood.html
Here is what happening in Utah today.
Our UASFAA (Utah Student Financial Aid Administrators) conference was held in April this year at Salt Lake Community College and claims the title for ‘the largest UASFAA attendance’ to date. It was filled with wonderful information and 116 revered colleagues to discuss current and upcoming changes to the Federal Student Aid program. Deb Tarpley shared the Federal Update from the Department of Education with us and Brenda Hick’s Harry Potter hat was a smash! Next year’s conference is scheduled to be held April 17-19 at Brigham Young University.
Camille Johnson jumped from LDS Business College to joined BYU in March. She replaced Kimberlee Aten, who decided to stay home and be a full-time mom. Camille is working primarily with BYU Financial Aid processing center and has already been a great addition to our office!
Mike Gibson joined our BYU Financial Aid office as Associate Director over systems in February. He has a strong technical and programming background, and most recently owned and operated an AlphaGraphics franchise in Tennessee.
Andrea Workman, who has been a Financial Aid Counselor at BYU and most recently was the Director of Integrated Student Services, had a baby girl in April and has decided to stay home with her daughter.
Cherie Egan, who has worked in BYU Financial Aid division for the past 10 years, just accepted a position in BYU’s Career and Counseling Center.
Brittany Johnson, who has been a Technical Specialist at BYU since 2007, will be moving to Michigan next month to attend Eastern Michigan University. She is excited to be pursuing a master’s degree in Higher Education Student Affairs.
Troy Selk has left the BYU Counseling Center to join the International Services Office on campus. We wish Troy well in his new assignment.
Lisa Parkinson is a new counselor in the BYU Counseling Center. She was formerly the Director of Multicultural Student Services and has already made a big splash in our division!
Cristi Millard recently served on the Negotiated Rule Making Committee for Student Loans. Way to go Cristi!
Jeff Johnsen retired from Salt Lake Community College on June 30, 2012 after 40 years of service. Jeff’s Financial Aid expertise and wonderful sense of humor will truly be missed. We congratulate him and wish him well for the future.
Janie Leddy is the new Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Western Governors University.
