Not so long ago, in a galaxy quite closer than you might imagine, Metro State gave a sad farewell to one of its best workstudies ever…but this is just the beginning of the story.  After serving 5 years as Lead Verifier for The Office of Financial Aid at Metro State, Richard Balbag saddled a comet, taking his master baking abilities and stunning attention to detail to an adjacent solar system when he accepted the Administrative Assistant III position at UC Denver from 2009-2010.

In our year without Richard, Metro State OFA staff potlucks languished without his exquisite expertise, leaving us begging for shortbread, and cheesecakes from our amazing bakers in residence, waiting for the planets to align and wishing on passing pulsars for his speedy return.

To our delight, our enduring voyager Richard Balbag has landed his spaceship once again at the bay door of Metro State OFA!  Taking his place as Program Assistant in the Loan Department, Richard has saved the day (and our potlucks as it were) and we could not be happier to have him back home!

In his debriefing, we were able to unearth these facts about our returning crew member:  Richard’s favorite guilty pleasure happens to be crushed Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies and vanilla ice cream! His hobbies include (but are by no means limited to) cooking, painting, and sleeping in on weekends.  His least favorite thing to tend to is a cardio workout, and when asked his favorite color he added, “It depends on the season.”

When asked why he chose to remain in the vast planetary system of Financial Aid he said, “It’s a way for me to give back, since as a student Financial Aid helped me a lot.” And when asked to give a bit of general advice to students with Financial Aid he added, “…don’t assume! Be proactive and know what is going on. If you don’t understand, ASK questions!”

Please join me in re-welcoming our Supernova to The Office of Financial Aid at Metro State…RICHARD BALBAG!

I do owe Pat and the rest of UCD! but well worth it! We actually just had a potluck today and you should all see the cake Richard brought to our office……….8 hours to make and decorate….french white cake with lemon and strawberry filling, fantastic icing with kiwi fruit and flowers decorating the top. A true work of beauty!
